Solidifying a Career Interest Through a WLC Summer Internship

This This summer, Ellis Naick, a Liberty High School junior, completed a Firefighter Student Practicum internship with the Coralville Fire Department, coordinated by Workplace Learning Connection. “My internship offered me some really cool and new experiences,” Ellis said. “The firefighters taught me a lot about firefighting equipment and techniques, such as the tools on the trucks and how to tie knots with rope. I got to go on several calls, clean the trucks, and teach a class on how to use fire extinguishers; I also had the chance to put on the fire gear.

Ellis Naick“During my internship, I learned that this career requires good communication, critical thinking skills, teamwork, perseverance, motivation, and organization. Out of all these skills, the need for teamwork stood out to me the most. I have learned from my time at the fire station that the fire department cannot function properly without teamwork. Whether it was when we were going out on calls, painting the fire station walls, or the times bonding over lunch, I have recognized the value of teamwork and cooperation.”

Ellis’ internship experience solidified his decision to pursue firefighting as his career path. He plans to attend Kirkwood in the future and take EMT and Fire Science courses.

“I would recommend that other high school students complete an internship through WLC as well,” said Ellis. “Participating in an internship while in high school gives you experience early on, plus you earn college credit. An internship gives students insight into future careers and can determine if it is the right path for them. Internships can lead the way for students to discover new careers as well.”
