Power Up for an In-Demand Career

In this program, you'll study the technical fundamentals necessary for a career in the energy industry, with particular attention focused on utility-scale turbine repair and maintenance.

You'll apply classroom concepts by regularly climbing and maintaining the 2.5 megawatt wind turbine located on our campus. Its four generators, hub, gearbox, nacelle, and other parts will give you valuable hands-on experience with these major compenents.

Kirkwood is the affordable option! We offer more than $3 million in scholarships every year. 

Students in this program may be eligible to have half their tuition paid for by the Kibbie Grant.

You'll learn skills unique to the field of wind energy maintenance:

  • Successfully climb an operational wind turbine, adhering to all applicable safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrate ability to use a multimeter for troubleshooting electrical circuits.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics to understand normal system operations.
  • Demonstrate understanding of Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedures for wind turbine and other equipment maintenance.
  • Perform required tasks using hand and power tools in accordance with applicable procedures.
  • Perform required wire maintenance tasks in accordance with applicable procedures.

A one-hour program conference is required prior to acceptance to the program. You'll learn more about the program, specific admissions requirements and have the opportunity to have questions answered by program faculty and staff.

Required coursework includes the study of mechanical drive systems, schematic reading, maintenance fundamentals, programmable logic controllers, and electrical theory and troubleshooting.
