You’ve served your country. Now let us serve you. These scholarships can help veterans and current members of the military offset the costs of attending Kirkwood and make the benefits you've earned go even further! 

Scholarship opportunities from Kirkwood are available for veterans of all branches of the military. We also have opportunities for military spouses and other dependents and family members.

Kirkwood Scholarships

These two scholarships are offered by the college. 

The Purple Heart Scholarship

The Purple Heart scholarship was created by an anonymous donor who gave Kirkwood Community College a five-year gift totaling $350,000 to help wounded veterans and their families.

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Those who earned the Purple Heart.
  • Spouses and children of Purple Heart recipients.
  • Must have a minimum 2.75 grade point average.

What is the award amount?

Scholarship recipients will have their tuition and books covered for their entire two-year program at Kirkwood.

Kirkwood's Veterans Scholarship

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Must be in the top 10 percent academically of the veterans who attend Kirkwood.
  • Must demonstrate financial need.

What is the award amount?

$1,000 per year.

Selective Scholarships

These scholarships have specific requirements about the type or branch of service. Check below to see if you qualify.

VFW Auxiliary Post 788 Scholarship: $500 per year

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Must be a United States veteran who has served active duty in a combat zone.
  • Must have a DD214 on file with Kirkwood’s Veteran Affairs Office.
  • Must have a minimum 2.0 grade point average.
  • Must demonstrate financial need.

Marine Corps League Scholarship: $500 per year

Recipient will receive one year of free membership to the Marine Corps League.

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Must be currently serving in active duty or honorably discharged.
  • Must be a Marine, Navy FMF Corpsman or Navy Chaplain.
  • Must have a minimum 2.0 grade point average.

Vets for Vets Scholarship: $750 per year

Established by the Veteran’s Committee of Cedar Rapids at General Mills.

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Preference to those who have a DD214 on file with Kirkwood and an honorable discharge.
  • Must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average.
  • Must demonstrate financial need.

Paul Glenn Memorial Endowed Scholarship

-Preference to those who are struggling with physical and/or emotional difficulties.

$750 per year

Learn more about your veterans benefits at Kirkwood or visit the Veterans Lounge at 119 Nielsen Hall, a place reserved just for our students who have served our country.

This study lounge space has four computers, a printer, snacks, and a microwave. This is a great place to find up-to-date veteran information and talk with other veterans.

Stop by and find your second home here at Kirkwood. The Lounge is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays.
