Join the Eagles Cheer Family!

Kirkwood’s co-ed cheerleading team performs at home basketball games and with a competition team. We’re a diverse and talented group of athletes, hailing from Cedar Rapids to as far away as California.

Join the team to cheer for national champion teams—and our close-knit Eagle family. Learn more about cheer at Kirkwood and keep up with our activities and events! Follow us on Facebook

4 Reasons to Get Involved

  1. Eagle family is forever! We have a strong alumni group who returns to Kirkwood regularly to perform, volunteer at events and attend open gyms. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle!
  2. Show off your skills! We consistently exhibit and compete at events, including area Dance Marathon events, local cheerleading competitions, the Iowa State High School Cheerleading Championships in Des Moines, competitions in Minneapolis,  and all the way to Cheer LTD Nationals in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
  3. We have a heart for our community! We volunteer at lots of events, including the ALS Walk in Cedar Rapids, reading to children in school on America Reads Day, and helping with the Special Olympics of Iowa's regional competitions, just to name a few.
  4. Mentor the next generation! We regularly hold open gyms for aspiring, current, and alumni cheerleaders to allow others to practice their skills in a safe, controlled environment at no out-of-pocket cost to attendees. We are proud to have helped local high school cheerleaders and coaches grow in their skills and programs with our support.

How to Try Out

Our cheer year begins in the spring. Tryouts for the upcoming school year traditionally take place the last weekend of April in Johnson Hall on the main Cedar Rapids campus.

What Tryouts Involve

  • Be ready to demonstrate your cheer, dance, jumps, tumbling, and stunting skills.
  • We'll teach you a chant and a dance to be demonstrated during the final tryouts.
  • Cheerleaders with college-level jumps, tumbling skills at a strong round-off and above, and solid stunting skills at liberty and above, will score highly at tryouts.
  • Because expectations of Eagle cheerleaders are high, we have also incorporated interviews into our tryout process.
