MIT TechAmp

Advance from Operator to Technologist

Kirkwood has partnered with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to bring the Technologist Advanced Manufacturing Program (TechAMP) to manufacturers throughout our Iowa region.

This innovative program prepares experienced operators and technicians to become leaders who can bridge the gap - that "missing middle" - between operations and engineering.

TechAMP (Technologist Advanced Manufacturing Program) is a 12-month workforce development program originally developed by MIT to address a growing need within advanced manufacturing.

The program helps participants connect the "why" of engineering concepts with the "how" of manufacturing operations through a blended learning experience that combines MIT-developed online curriculum with in-person labs and instruction at Kirkwood.

Kirkwood Community College intends to launch this program Fall 2027.

The TechAMP Program will:

  • Bridge the Gap – Connect technician/operator expertise with engineering-level thinking
  • Build a Career Ladder – Create a structured path from skilled operator to confident lead
  • Influence Real-World Impact – Apply learning directly to workplace with a capstone project

Participants who will get the most out of the TechAMP program include:

  • Operators with 3+ years of manufacturing experience
  • Individuals seeking leadership opportunities
  • Employees interested in bridging the gap between operations and engineering

TechAMP uses a hub-and-spoke model.

Hubs: Statistical Process Control, Manufacturing Systems, Technical Leadership, Operations Management

Spokes: Mechatronics, Automation Programming, Robotics, Machining, Digital Manufacturing, Design & Manufacturing Fundamentals

Academic Program (Fall and Spring):

  • MIT-led online learning modules
  • In-person laboratory & applied learning experiences at Kirkwood
  • Time commitment: 14 hours/week, including weeknights and weekends

Internship/Capstone (Summer):
Company-driven capstone project, with collaboration between MIT and Kirkwood

Why TechAMP?

Advanced manufacturing faces a persistent workforce challenge. Engineers are trained to design systems, while technicians are trained to operate equipment. As manufacturing environments become increasingly sophisticated through automation, robotics, digital controls, and data-driven technologies, organizations need professionals who can effectively operate between those two worlds.

That "missing middle" is where the technologist emerges.

TechAMP was specifically designed to develop these highly valuable professionals - individuals who understand manufacturing operations while also applying engineering concepts, systems thinking, and leadership skills to solve complex challenges and improve organizational performance.
