The Kirkwood Washington County Regional Center is excited to once again offer summer youth camp programming! Students this summer will experience some exciting changes! For the first time current Kindergarten students are invited to participate in the week of fun! A newly designed camp offering for this age group will offer students five exciting, themed days full of learning and activities. Older students will select from a complete new line up of camp offerings!
The goal in offering these camps is to provide interactive, educational and fun opportunities to area youth to keep students engaged and excited about learning during the summer. The camp meets from 9 am – noon each day and students will have many exciting courses to choose from, all taught by interactive, talented and local instructors.
Kindergarten students will sign up for the entire week of themed days. Students in grades 1st – 5th will choose three exciting classes for their camp experience while students in grades 6th-8th will focus on a more in-depth camp session, choosing just one course for the five days. Grade level is determined by grade student is enrolled as of May 1, 2019. Transportation will be provided for students, if needed. There will be several drop-off and pick-up sites throughout the county for students. Limited scholarship assistance is also available for students who quality for the free and reduced lunch program.

Spend the day under the sea like Ariel and Sebastian of “The Little Mermaid” exploring the treasures we can find. While you are there, you can check out the creatures of the ocean and the habitats they live in. You will have the opportunity to learn about your favorite ocean animals, shells, and other treasures you may have found.
What kind of animals do you like? You will have the opportunity to learn about what animals make good pets, exotic animals that live far away, and animals that only come out at night. You will get to touch, smell, play, and feed pets, make a craft, and other exciting activities.
Be ready to get crazy with science concoctions of all kinds! Experiment with goo that goes glop, and things that fizzle, sizzle, and pop! Learn the magic of science while getting a little messy along the way.
Going on a Bear Hunt
Let’s go on a bear hunt! Do you know where to look? We will go exploring outside, do some indoor camping, and have a wild adventure along the way.
Spend this day in space! You will see all the wonders of the solar system. Kids will learn about the planets, discover constellations, and even build a rocket ship as they study space travel in these fun out-of-this-world activities.
1st - 2nd Grade Offerings
Slime Slime All the Time!
WHAT TIME IS IT? It’s SLIME TIME! Slime has taken over YouTube, elementary schools, and kitchens across America, and is now taking over Kirkwood! You will be elbow deep for a week in learning the science behind the slime, while most importantly having fun and trying out new creative slime formulas. You will create fluffy slime, glitter slime, glow-in-the-dark slime, and use what you’ve learned to create your own personal slime concoction. Materials Fee: $10
The Counting Chef
Join our Counting Chef in the exploration and creation of kid-friendly recipes while learning math! This hands-on class will be full of food, fun, and learning that each time you cook you are using math. As an added bonus, you can eat your math problem! Materials Fee: $5 Food allergy alert: please indicate if your child has a food allergy on the registration form. Edible Art Be prepared for food and art to collide! In this class, playing with your food is encouraged and just might lead to a masterpiece. You will make edible finger paint, try your hand at bread painting, swirl up special sand for a new kind of sand art and more! Materials Fee: $5
Crazy for cats? Dreaming of dogs? Discover new and interesting things about pets. Learn training tips and how to care for common house pets as well as warning signs, shared by a local veterinarian, for when your pet might be ill. This will be an exciting week full of feathers, fur, barks, beaks, claws, and critters. There will be plenty of time for snuggling and petting of the animals!
Fairy Forests & Gnome Gardens
Learn about the magical world of fairies and gnomes, and design and create their very own home! Boys and girls will listen to stories about fairies and gnomes and what makes them so enchanted. You will then make your own plan to create your very own fairy or gnome garden. Garden containers, small plants and decorative items provided to create exciting dreamlike worlds. Students encouraged to bring your imagination, enchanted items from home, and natural materials to include in their fairy or gnome home. Materials Fee: $7
To Infinity and Beyond
Do you ever gaze up at the night sky and dream of traveling to the outer edges of the galaxy and beyond? Blast off to outer space this week and let your galactic adventure begin. You will learn about planets, stars, asteroids, comets, meteoroids, and more!
3rd - 5th Grade Offerings
Fiesta for Kids!
There is no time for siesta, it’s time to FIESTA! Wonder why piñatas are essential to birthday parties? You can learn why as you make your own! You will also create Lucha Libre masks, Mexican paper flowers, Dia De Los Muertos sugar skulls (Day of the Dead sugar skulls), and other interesting items connected to the Mexican culture. While you create you will learn about unique traditions and crafts of the Mexican culture – Fiesta style! Materials Fee: $10
Construct and Create
Future architects, construction professionals, and engineers - this class is for you! In a safe lab environment, use real tools and wood to construct a project to take home and show all of your family and friends. Never used a power tool before? That’s okay, we’ll teach you! Materials fee: $8
Wilderness Survival 101
Would you know what to do if you were lost in the woods? Or perhaps caught up in the unlikely event of a zombie apocalypse? Do you have the skills needed to survive? You will after this taking this class! Learn how to look for a shelter, make a fire, be able to identify and collect suitable water, master tying of rescue knots, and how to navigate the wilderness by day – without a compass or map! Trained Eagle Scouts will lead the way in the course and teach you how to be dry, fed, and not dead! (Students encouraged to wear tennis shoes each day.)
Enjoy explosions, reactions, and bubbly brews? Then this class is for you! You will be entertained and educated while learning the “wow” and facts behind weird science and experiments! Come ready to explore, experiment, and get a little messy! Materials fee: $3
Love technology? Want to develop video games when you grow up? Like to figure out how things work? Then sign up for Coding 101! Learn computer programming skills through interactive and exciting games. Have a blast creating animated stories and bringing ideas to life. Learn how to create characters, animations, sounds and special effects. WARNING: You won’t even realize all of the cool things you are learning like basic coding and programming, problem solving, logic, physics, and more!
Project: No Sew
There are lots of ways to have fun with fabric that doesn’t require a sewing machine! You will learn to make your own fabric and fleece projects that you will be proud to show to your friends. Projects will be determined by instructor and could include no sew pillow, tissue holder, fleece scarf, or others. Materials Fee: $7. Students asked to bring 1 cotton t-shirt, any size; 1 pair thin crew-style socks, any color; 1 white sock, 1 colored sock, with pattern if desired.
6th - 8th Grade Offerings
Ready, Set, Go! Become a Robot Pro
Are you a robot enthusiast? Do you love to build? Then you will love this class! It is an innovative and creative experience that will let you use your imagination! Working in small teams, you will assemble a mini robot using building models, attach sensors and computer-controlled motors, and configure their behavior using a simple programming tool. You will program and control the robot to perform tasks within a playing field environment. Robots will compete against each other in a setting that fosters self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
Welding Metal Creations
Make sparks fly this summer! Learn to cut and weld steel using a wire welder, cutting torch, and plasma cutter – just like the pros. No prior experience necessary and proper safety will be covered. Leather shoes, long sleeves, and long pants are required. Projects will vary. Come ready to create, fabricate, and weld. Materials fee: $12
Do you love learning about cars? Are you counting down the days until you can drive? This camp is for you! In a state-of-the-art auto lab, learn basic automotive vehicle knowledge and try your hand at routine auto repairs. Become the car expert and go-to person in your family for quick fixes and car facts!
Have you dreamed of visiting well-known fashion hotspots such as Paris, Milan and NYC? Do you want to express your creativity and become a fashion trendsetter? If so, this course is for you! Learn how to create customized looks both in a virtual platform, and in real-life! Explore color palettes, selecting fashion for body shapes, complete a personal style analysis and more. Interactive field-trips to apparel boutiques will give you the chance to learn from fashion industry experts, as well as try your hand at styling, accessorizing, and planning for a new back-to-school wardrobe on a budget.
