|Frequently Asked Questions
Are all scholarships based on academic achievement? SHOW MORE
Some, but not all, Kirkwood scholarships are based on academics. Other factors considered include financial need, residency, leadership, program or area of study, or other requirements.
Are scholarship funds available every year? SHOW MORE
Endowed scholarships are available every year. Other scholarships are available as long as the donor contributes the funds.
Do I have to be a full-time student to apply for scholarships? SHOW MORE
Certain scholarships are based on full-time enrollment (12 or more credit hours per semester), but not all. Scholarships requiring full-time attendance are noted as such within the scholarship criteria. All recipients must enroll in a minimum of six credit hours per semester to receive an award.
When can I apply for scholarships? SHOW MORE
The application period for scholarship awards opens Oct
, and the scholarship application is available online
. To be considered for scholarships, you must have a current Kirkwood application for admission on file.
When is the deadline for applying for scholarships? SHOW MORE
Application materials must be submitted to the Scholarship office via electronic application by March 15 in order to be considered for first-round funding opportunities.
What if I’ve missed the first deadline? SHOW MORE
Applications received after the deadline will be eligible for a limited amount of second-round funding opportunities and new scholarships developed after the March 15 deadline. Applications for second-round opportunities are due July 15.
Should existing scholarship opportunities need to be reopened (if a recipient elects not to attend Kirkwood and declines an opportunity), all eligible applicants at that time will be considered for second-round and/or subsequent awards. This will include any new scholarships established throughout the course of the current school year. Current-year scholarship applicants who meet the criteria of a new scholarship opportunity will be considered for that award. The Scholarship Selection Committee determines awards.
The majority of award notifications are sent by mid-June. Some recipients may decline scholarship awards, causing a scholarship to reopen and be awarded at a later date.
Please note that certain scholarships have special application processes that are listed on this website.
To be considered for more than one scholarship, do I need to fill out multiple applications? SHOW MORE
Submit only one application even if you qualify for more than one scholarship, unless the specific scholarship criterion states otherwise. Every attempt will be made to match available scholarships to your specific situation based upon the detailed information you provide in your application.
When are scholarship awards made? SHOW MORE
For the majority of scholarships, recipient selection is usually completed by mid-June.
Departmental committees award selected scholarships. These departmental awards may not follow the same timeline for the award selection process. As a result, some scholarships are not awarded until a later date.
Note: Since applications can be reviewed at multiple times throughout the school year, you will not be notified if you are not selected as a recipient.
Who selects scholarship recipients? SHOW MORE
A scholarship committee composed of Kirkwood faculty and staff, representing multiple areas of the college, screens the applications. The committee meets in April to make recommendations based on donor criterion. Academic department scholarship committees choose selected scholarship recipients.
How do I find out if I’ve been selected to receive a scholarship? SHOW MORE
You can expect to be notified by email if you are selected to receive a scholarship. Email notification will be sent to your Kirkwood email address.
If I am awarded a scholarship, how long will I receive funding? SHOW MORE
Most scholarship awards begin in the fall semester immediately following your notification and acceptance of the award(s) and will also be available in the spring of the following year. Some scholarships have a specific arrangement that allows a summer award as well. Once the current academic year is over, your scholarship funding will end. Kirkwood's scholarship application period for the next academic year begins Oct. 1.
What other scholarship opportunities are available to me, outside of Kirkwood? SHOW MORE
You should inquire about private scholarships with your high school counselor, employer, church and/or local civic organizations. You should never pay money to complete a scholarship application.
