Distance Learning Course Format Options

Distance learning courses at Kirkwood are delivered in a variety of different ways. Some require that you’re online at a certain time and others do not.

Explore the options below and determine what’s best for you.

Are Online Classes Right for Me?

Here are some of your questions answered:

  • I don’t want to have to be online at a certain time for class.
Online classes allow for the most flexibility, meaning you don’t have to be available at a certain day and time.
  • I have access to a computer with high-speed Internet.
You’ll need access to a computer with a Web camera and microphone, and your connection needs to support Internet speeds capable of streaming video.
  • I’m OK working independently, without regular reminders from my instructors.
Instructors provide deadlines on assignments and exams just as they would in an in-person class. However, without regular meeting times, you’ll need to follow the syllabus closely to keep up.
  • I don’t want to travel, or can’t travel, to campus.
As an online student, you have access to all the same resources as a face-to-face student, if you choose to visit campus or a county/regional center.

Are WebLive Classes Right for Me?

Here are some of your questions answered:

  • I want a live connection to my instructor and classmates.
WebLive classes include regular meeting times with your instructor and your classmates via a Web conferencing tool called Zoom. Learn more about Zoom here.
  • I have access to a computer with high-speed Internet and technology that allows for Web-conferencing.
You’ll need access to a computer with a Web camera and microphone, and your connection needs to support Internet speeds capable of streaming video.
  • There’s a chance I might be able to attend classes at a county or regional center.
WebLive classes are also offered face-to-face at your local county or regional center. See locations here. Please note, as of right now, all Kirkwood locations are closed, but are scheduled to reopen August 3.
