Mission

The mission of Kirkwood’s Tutoring Services is to provide academic support to all students enrolled at Kirkwood Community College creating an open environment of learning for students.

Goals

Included in our goals is the desire to assist students to become successful in their course work. This is initiated by targeting individual learning styles and strategies, helping the student further understand course content, preparing for exams and expanding study skills that will benefit the student in all subjects for life-long learning.

Eligibility

Tutoring services are offered FREE to part-time and full-time Kirkwood students enrolled in credit classes for which tutoring is sought. Students may receive up to two (2) hours per week for two (2) credit classes per semester.

Group Tutoring
Group Tutoring

Students who seek tutoring services do so for a variety of reasons. Students may need:
  • To understand course material better
  • To receive support through challenging chapters
  • To confirm they are on the right track
  • To maintain an A standard.

What tutoring options are available to me?

The college offers four tutoring format options:
  • Individual tutoring
  • Walk-in (group) tutoring
  • Online tutorials
  • Computer application skills

Individual tutoring

Individual tutoring is conducted in person, one tutor per student. Applications to receive tutoring can be filled out at Tutoring Services located in room 133 Linn Hall or online. You may apply online here for a tutor request. Once you have applied for a tutor, Tutoring Services will share information with you to contact your new tutor and set up an appointment. Tutors include current students, recent Kirkwood graduates and instructors that meet our criteria. Students may meet with tutors in Tutoring Services, various campus locations, libraries, coffee shops, or any Tutoring Services approved venue during the hours of 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday -Friday. Tutoring may not occur in a home or apartment. Weekend hours are at the discretion of the tutor/learner. We strive to have tutors available for all credit classes. In cases where a tutor is not available, we may need to contact instructors for a list of potential tutors.

Walk-in (group) tutoring

Walk-in tutoring is conducted on a drop-in basis, with unlimited usage throughout the semester. This is a free service to our students. Tutors available in 133 Linn Hall during specified times each day to assist students.

Computer application skills

Within Tutoring Services you will find a nine-station computer lab for student use. These stations are loaded with all the necessary software to carry out your academic needs. Support staff is available to answer your questions Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. In addition, these terminals are enhanced with TextHelp Read and Write Gold, an award-winning literacy software that works within all mainstream Windows applications.

Study skills

Like numerous Kirkwood students, you may need assistance in developing study skills and other strategies to achieve success in your course work. The following topics are addressed to aid in your college experience. Information on ways to enhance your abilities in taking notes, test taking, time and stress management, and reading textbooks are available. Please click on Study Skills to access these strategies.

Learning styles

Have you ever noticed that some classes seem easier that others? This may be due to the subject matter, the instructor and your interest, but your individual learning style might also play a part in your ability to take in information and stimuli. Your brain is unique and you process information differently than anyone else will. To give you a clearer picture of how you process information and to help enhance your learning potential, we offer this online 44 question quiz developed by NC State to help you discover your learning styles.

Is tutoring not available for some classes?

We aim to serve 100% of those students who request tutoring for credit courses in which they are currently enrolled. There are some classes for which tutoring is not offered. Generally, we do NOT provide tutoring for:
  • Continuing Education
  • English Language Acquisition
  • English Composition (Basic Reading, Basic Writing, Elements of Writing, Composition and Literature classes)

Rather than provide tutoring for these courses, there are more primary sources of assistance available on campus.

  • For English Language Acquisition (ELA)
    • Contact the International Student Office at 319-398-5579.
  • For Writing-
    • Learning Services, 133 Linn Hall 319-398-5574

CRLA Certified Tutor Program

CRLA (College and Reading Learning Association) is an internationally known body whose main function and overall purpose is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas, methods, and information to improve student learning and to facilitate the professional growth of its members. We attained our CRLA certification in July of 2006. This provides recognition and positive reinforcement for tutors' successful work from an international organization and the certification process sets a standard of skills and training for our tutoring program.
