Student Support Services is a program specifically designed to assist students in the transition to higher education and the college environment. TRIO staff provides Kirkwood students with advice, guidance and support to achieve their academic goals, such as obtaining an Associate's Degree and/or transferring to a four-year post-secondary institution. Students work with an individual advisor to meet TRIO program supports including but not limited to: goal and solution based counseling, financial aid process assistance, math and writing support, and transfer decision making and connecting.
TRIO programs are federally funded under the Higher Education Act of 1965. TRIO programs help students overcome class, social and cultural barriers in higher education.
To be eligible for the TRIO program, a student must meet one of the following eligibility criteria and be citizen or national of the United States:
- First generation college student (neither parent has earned a bachelor's degree)
- Low income
- Physical or mental disability
