Kirkwood Telecommunications System
KTS Distance Learning Operations
When students take a class using Kirkwood's interactive instructional television system, they are connected electronically with classmates and instructors throughout Kirkwood's seven county service area as well as the state of Iowa. These are live interactive classes and they offer students the convenience of continuing or expanding their education close to home.
Distance Learning System
Kirkwood's Distance Learning System is comprised of two separate delivery systems:
KTS System - Kirkwood's IP based distance learning system is an interactive instructional television system that's owned and operated exclusively by and for Kirkwood distance learning classes. This system links 21 Kirkwood county center classrooms with other locations in Kirkwood's seven county service area. Students attend at a receive site where they can see and hear the instructor via television monitors in their classroom. The instructor and the students at other sites can see and hear questions or comments when students use the push-to-talk microphones.
Iowa Communications Network (ICN) - The ICN is a statewide fiber optic communications system that provides interactive video, voice and data services. Instructional television students can see and hear the instructor and students at the other sites. Students use the push-to-talk microphones to ask questions or make comments. Instructional television classrooms are located at over 700 locations in K-12 school districts, community colleges, regent universities, area education agencies, public libraries, and other locations throughout the state.
