Phone Equipment and Services
What We Do
Telephone System Services is responsible for all of the telephone service, inter and intra facility fiber and copper cable for telephones and data, broadband cable, associated modems and transmission equipment. The campus telephone system is a direct inward and outward dial Fujitsu Private Branch Exchange (PBX). Telephone System Services is located in Linn Hall, room B1, extension 4982, and is responsible for the administration and acquisition, installation and maintenance of voice communications equipment. They consist of providing:
Basic Telephone Service
A basic analog (single line) telephone with a non-direct inward dial (non-DID) telephone number is provided at no cost for all private offices or individual desks in a large office setting. If the person receives a high number of calls from off campus, a direct inward dial (DID) number may be requested from Telephone System Services, extension 4982. Due to the limited number of DID numbers available, these requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Expanded Telephone Service - Upgrades and Options Available
Expanded telephone service consists of multi-line, multi-button digital telephone sets, with or without LCD readouts and speakerphone capability. If upgrading, departments will be required to pay the upgrade cost for the digital set(s). Listed below are costs associated with purchasing a new phone. If upgrading, a credit will be given for a trade-in.

Class of Service
Each telephone is programmed with a designated COS. This determines if only on-campus, local or long distance calls can be made from that telephone set. The COS is determined by each department administrator. Standard COS available includes:
1) Campus dialing only. 2) Campus and local calls only. 3) Campus dialing, local calls and long distance.
Custom Feature Codes
The college PBX telephone system provides for a number of standard features, depending upon whether you have a digital phone or analog phone. Some of these features are: Last Number Recall, Call Park, Camp On and various other feature codes. For a complete description, click on the phone type that you are using.

Voice Mailbox Service
Any telephone number can be assigned a voice mailbox to record messages when you are not available to answer your telephone. A quick guide is available here.
Conference Calling
Kirkwood promotes the use of Telenet + conferencing for almost all telephone conference calls which involve persons who would incur a long distance charge. Kirkwood is a member of this system and through the membership fee that is paid, all conference calls are at no cost. Speakerphones, like the one seen here, are available for checkout from AV Services.

To schedule the conference through Telenet, call 1-800-284-4823 and ask for the Telenet conference scheduler. You will be asked the date, time, approximate length of the conference as well as how many people are involved. You will be sent a fax or email with the information necessary to connect to the conference call. This information includes an 800 number for each party to call at the time of the conference and two access codes necessary to get connected to the call. It will then be your responsibility to forward this information to all parties involved in the conference. All individuals involved in the call will use the same 800 number and same access codes.
Long Distance Service
All telephones at Kirkwood Community College are programmed for either campus calls only, campus and local calls only, or campus, local and long distance. To make a long distance call, a long distance code is required. A code can be assigned to you by contacting Angie Held or Mark Zuber. To make the call, dial 1 plus the area code and telephone number. When you hear a second dial tone, enter the LD Access Code that you have been assigned and the call will be completed.
Calling Card Service
An ICN calling card can be issued to those persons who travel frequently and need to make long distance business calls while off campus. Contact Angie Held at extension 5507 to request a calling card.
Cellular Telephone Service
Telecommunications is responsible for all cellular telephone agreements with the various cellular providers. To purchase a cell phone, a supervisor that the cell phone user reports to must authorize the purchase. The cell phone may be used on an infrequent basis for personal calls, but the individual is responsible for reimbursing the college for those personal calls. A copy of the monthly invoice will be sent to the cellular user. The user denotes the personal calls on the invoice, signs and returns the invoice to Telecommunications, 102 LH, along with a check made payable to Kirkwood.
Fax Machines/Lines
Facsimile machines require a direct inward dial (DID) analog telephone number. If you want to use an existing telephone number and are not sure if the number is digital or analog, call extension 4982 and speak to Mark Zuber.
Phonetic Attendant
Kirkwood Community College utilizes a speech recognition system that can be used for all internal and external calls rather than looking up the telephone number. Simply dial 7400, or if off campus, dial 398-7400 and follow the prompts. Clearly speak the person's name when prompted or wait for the department directory. The Phonetic Attendant will then transfer your call to the requested telephone. If you are calling a person, to save time, you can press the # key as soon as you hear the prompt and then say the person's name. The Phonetic Attendant will verify the name of the person you are calling by asking, "Did you say ....?" You then respond by saying yes or no. If yes, you will be transferred to that person. If Phonetic Attendant did not correctly interpret the name you requested, simply say no and follow the prompts. The Phonetic Attendant will try twice. If not successful, you will be transferred to the college operator for assistance.
The Phonetic Attendant is also used to answer all off campus incoming calls during non business hours of the college. During college closings for inclement weather, holidays and other non standard closings, the Phonetic Attendant will announce why the college is closed and an appropriate message concerning when the college expects to re-open. After the announcement, you may use Phonetic Attendant to transfer your call if you feel the person you wish to speak with is at his/her telephone.
Phone Directories
The college receives both Qwest Dex and the Yellow Book. To receive a copy of either book, please contact Central Receiving at extension 5148 to have one delivered to you in campus mail.
Directory Assistance
If you need to use directory assistance, please call 9-411. Kirkwood is using a contracted directory assistance company for inquiries on telephone numbers nation wide. This will reduce the cost of obtaining telephone numbers by more than 50 %. Please do not use 9-1-XXX-555-1212 for directory assistance as these calls will be billed at a much higher rate. However, for toll-free number directory assistance, continue to call 9-1-800-555-1212.
