Phil has taught writing, literature and film studies at Kirkwood since 1991. He holds two Masters Degrees in American Studies focusing upon cinema and cultural studies from the University of Iowa and Purdue University. His B.A. was in English, with an emphasis upon literature, cinema studies and Oriental cultures from Drake University. Besides teaching, Phil, under his alias, Philm, produces, writes and hosts two televisions shows on Kirkwood’s cable station (KTS): “At the Movies with Philm”, and the Telly award winning “Tumbleweed Theatre: Out West with Philm”. His hobbies include gardening, filmmaking, baseball and fishing. As a family they love making movies together and they often contribute to his show in a variety of capacities.

Keith has been a professor here at Kirkwood since 1997. He teaches Environmental Science, Microbes and Society, Human Biology, Human Evolution, Micribiology, Basic Biological Concepts, and Biology for Non-majors. He earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Microbiology from West Virginia University, his M.S. in Biology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and his B.S. in Biology from Lock Haven University. When he is not at Kirkwood he enjoys spending time with his wife, son, and their two cats. He also enjoys watching sci-fi and horror movies and playing racketball

“Dr. Jen” started as an adjunct instructor at Kirkwood in January of 1997 and joined the faculty full-time in 2001. She teaches Psychology, Sociology, and Statistics classes through Distance Learning. She earned her B.A. in Psychology from Coe College, her M.A. in Sociology from the University of Northern Iowa, and her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from Iowa State University. Her doctoral dissertation was on family of origin influences on premarital cohabitation, and she has completed various research studies on the intergenerational transmission of romantic behavior. She was awarded the Frank Costin Memorial Award of Excellence for best promoting quality teaching methods from the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology.

Jed has been a full time instructor in the Distance Learning department since 2003, teaching AT/AW internet courses as well as courses over the KTS. He teaches US History to 1877, US History Since 1877, Ancient Mediterranean World, Europe in the Age of Monarchy, Europe in the Age of Revolutions, Europe in the Age of Nationalism, and Native American History. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Iowa State University, and a Master’s Degree from both the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa. He is involved in the Honors program and Study Abroad opportunities for Kirkwood students. While he has many hobbies and interests, his favorite activities center around spending time with his wife Wendi, who teaches math at Kirkwood, and his five children: Hannah, Jaeden, Annika, and Liam and Logan.

For three and a half years as an adjunct instructor at Kirkwood, Laura taught Understanding Cultures: Latin America and Understanding Cultures: Modern Japan before joining the Distance Learning Department in 2005. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and an M.A. from Iowa State. Her particular areas of interest include the Guatemalan civil war and Japan's economic development.
