A long-term educational investment for the central Kirkwood region, the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa offers traditional college programming
as well as:
- Innovative, high tech career academies with industry-recognized certifications
- Liberal Arts and Sciences transfer courses
- College readiness assessment and placement exams, including the National Career Readiness Certification
- Scholarship and financial aid services, academic advising and career counseling services
- Kirkwood Continuing Education courses and certification programs
Students may follow several pathways after completing Kirkwood's career academies. Examples include college certificates, diplomas, associates, bachelors and graduate degrees and even immediate employment.
Workplace Learning Connection
Also at the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa is the Workplace Learning Connection (WLC). Fully embedded in the learning experience at the Regional Center, the Workplace Learning Connection brings high school students together with local business and industry to provide job shadows and internships.
Workplace Learning Connection is a valuable career exploration tool schools can use to help students understand that what they’re learning in the classroom is applicable
to real life. Recent job shadow data indicates that Kirkwood’s programming aligns
with many “hot jobs” students want including health care occupations, engineering
WLC staff members are located in the main office of the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa. They are ready to help students get connected to future careers through work-based learning.
ICAN - Iowa College Access Network
ICAN's mission is to empower Iowans to achieve their educational and career goals through statewide comprehensive outreach, initiatives and partnerships with schools, groups and businesses. Ryan Ronan, an ICAN student success advisor, is located in the main office of the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa. Ryan can help at any stage of the planning process, from determining career choices, to lining up colleges that offer the appropriate programs and majors, to coming up with a strategy to finance it all.
Southeast Iowa STEM Hub
The goal of increasing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) interest and achievement is critical to regaining Iowa's historic legacy as a leader in education and workforce development. In fact, STEM is a vital economic development advantage for quality job growth in our state. STEM graduates are in great demand to meet current and future workforce needs.
Created with the goal of increasing STEM interest and achievement, the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council is a collaboration of bipartisan Iowa legislators, educators, businesses, nonprofits, students and families focused on improving STEM opportunities and awareness in Iowa.
Kristine Bullock, regional STEM manager, and Dave Jacoby, community liaison, located in the lower level of the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa are continuously looking for ways to engage educators, businesses and community organizations to strengthen the STEM pipeline from school to careers.
