Why did you choose to pursue your education at Kirkwood?
Honestly, it was a tie between the money factor and the clinical experience factor. I was accepted with a scholarship at a private, four-year college, but the price was still way beyond what I was willing to pay, at least for the first 2 years. I had also heard from other nurses that at Kirkwood, students are allowed a lot of clinical time to help enhance their skills. I am a hands on and visual learner so I thought, “This would be perfect for me!”
What are your educational or career plans for after graduation
I plan on attending either UIU or University of Iowa after Kirkwood in order to obtain my Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. My long-term educational goals include becoming an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner and traveling abroad to help those in need of medical assistance who can’t afford it. I think I would like to work on a Pediatric floor of a hospital because I thoroughly enjoyed my pediatric clinical experience at St. Luke’s Hospital.
From a personal and financial standpoint, describe the impact your scholarship has on your education.
Not only did receiving scholarships help me financially, but it also emphasized the lesson my parents have always instilled in me and my siblings—that working hard towards your goals pays off in the end. With the help of scholarship donors, I have used less student loan money than I thought I would, which allows me to stress less.
