Name: Jeorgie Smith
Hometown: Marion, IA
Program of Study: Communications Media/PR and Broadcast News at Drake Univeristy
Expected Graduation Date: 2016 from Drake University
Why did you choose to pursue your education at Kirkwood?
I originally came to Kirkwood because my “Plan A” became
too expensive. I stayed because I fell in love with the community and campus. The facilities I used in the Communications Media program were better than those at many four-year institutions.
The news studio is all brand new with HD cameras, amazing editing technology, and two walls of green and white screens.
What are your educational or career plans for after graduation
My plan after Kirkwood is to transfer to Drake University and continue in the communications field. After my internship at a local radio station, z102.9, I knew that I was in the right place. Without coming to Kirkwood first, I wouldn’t have discovered
what I wanted to do in life.
From a personal and financial standpoint, describe the impact your scholarship has on your education.
Finances are a big deal to me—my goal at Kirkwood was to finish without any debt. I found this accomplishable, but it took a lot of work. I had to work 30 hours per week which reduced the amount of time I could spend being a college student and participating in events put on by Kirkwood. The scholarship allows me to cut back on my hours at my job so I can focus more on my studies and enjoy my time as a student.
