As defined by the Iowa Department of Education, Senior Year Plus is an important part of high school reform efforts in Iowa. Through SYP programs, high school students are provided rigorous opportunities for advanced learning and can earn college credit while in high school.

To this end, Kirkwood partners with Area X school districts to prepare students to learn essential 21st century skills and earn college credit through postsecondary learning options, concurrent enrollment programs (CEP) and Kirkwood Career Academies.
Operationally, Kirkwood's outreach for College Credit in High School is guided by SYP legislation from the Iowa State Department of Education. CCHS also complies with college policies as identified in the Kirkwood Community College Student Handbook.
There are addendums to policies in the Student Handbook specific to College Credit in High School programs.
