Respiratory Therapist

To get into the Respiratory Therapist program, you must meet the following additional standards. These steps/requirements are in addition to Kirkwood's steps to become a student. These test scores are valid for three years:

  • ACT Required Score: Math-18 and Recommended Scores: English-18, Reading-19, OR
  • Compass Required Score: Math-50 and Recommended Scores: Writing-32, Reading-71, OR
  • Completion of equivalent college courses, with a C- or better, can also take the place of placement test: Survey of Math (MAT-107), Intermediate Algebra (MAT-102) or higher for Math, Composition I for Writing, and Introduction to Psychology for Reading (send official transcript to the One Stop office for credit evaluation), OR
  • Applicants with an associate, bachelor’s or higher degree do not need to complete placement test.
If scores were not met, we advise you take the Health Prep course, which is available in Learning Services, 2063 Cedar Hall, 319-398-5456.

Students must complete the following pre-requisite courses with C- or better:

  • Basic Anatomy & Physiology (3 credit)
  • Microbiology (4 credit)
  • Introduction to Chemistry (3 credit)

All admissions policies and procedures are subject to change at anytime. Students are accepted and placed on the waitlist (if applicable) to the Respiratory Therapist program after all admission criteria are met.
