About the RCEMSE

The Regional Center for EMS Education (RCEMSE) is a partnership between Kirkwood Community College, Mercy Medical Center, Area Ambulance Service and St. Lukes Hospital. By combining resources, the RCEMSE is able to offer high quality, accessible EMS education programs in the seven county area served by Kirkwood Community College.

Job Overview

EMS providers administer emergency medical assessment, treatment and transportation for victims of accidents, heart attacks, drowning, poisonings, unscheduled childbirth, gunshot wounds, and a variety of other illnesses and injuries. EMS personnel often encounter difficult situations in which they must provide creative solutions. EMS personnel work indoors and outdoors, in all types of weather. The daily routine requires physical strength and agility. The job includes bending, heavy lifting and accessing small or confined spaces. Paramedic Specialists, the highest practicing level, must be able to function autonomously, must make decisions and act quickly. EMS is not for those who desire a daily work routine, as the volume and type of work vary greatly from day to day. EMS personnel can work full or part-time, according to a variety of schedules. Because of the nature of the work, those in this profession must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays.

Back to RCEMSE

Role of EMS Providers

The traditional role of the EMS provider is to provide emergency treatment of the sick and injured at the scene and during transportation to the hospital. While this role will remain, especially for EMT-Bs, EMT-Is, and Iowa Paramedics, increasingly, the Paramedic Specialist can expect to find employment in emergency departments, cardiac and intensive care units, occupational health and other settings. The average salary for a Paramedic Specialist is $36,000. (Source: Occupational Outlook Handbook)
