Kim Muhl came to Kirkwood in September, 1989. As he starts his 21st season as coach for the women's basketball program, Muhl has led teams to 19 regional finals, 13 national tournaments and 5 national titles. He has produced 15 consecutive 25-win seasons in basketball, including a school record 36 wins in 2008-2009.
In 1990, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006,2007,2008 and 2009 Muhl was named Region XI Coach of the Year. His teams won regional basketball titles those same years. Muhl's basketball teams have been regional runner-up six times. He was named "Outstanding Coach of the Tournament" at the 1997, 2002, 2007, 2008 and 2009 NJCAA Division II National Tournaments. The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) named Muhl the Russell Athletic 2007 JC/CC Coach of the Year.
He currently sports a 587-111 record, including a phenomenal 263-23 record at home. From 2001 until January 2006 his teams have won 76 straight conference games. He has coached 15 All-Americans including 13 First Team All-Americans and 5 WBCA All-Americans.
Muhl has attracted regional and national attention for Eagle programs. The women's basketball teams have been ranked #1 in the NJCAA Division II polls on several occasions. Four-year colleges have been regular visitors to Kirkwood's campus. Former Kirkwood players under Muhl have gone on to play at Iowa State, Northern Iowa, Oregon, South Florida, Drake, Illinois State, Southwest Missouri State, St. Johns, Stetson, Marquette and various NCAA Division II and NAIA schools.
Coach Muhl earned his BA at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, IA and his MA in Secondary Education at Cumberland College in Williamsburg, KY. |
