Viticulture, in its simplest sense, is the science of growing grapes. Because of their hardiness and adaptability, grapes are grown on every continent except Antarctica.
Some of the aspects of grape production management include monitoring and controlling pests and diseases, fertilizing, irrigation, canopy management, monitoring fruit development and characteristics, deciding when to harvest and vine pruning during the winter months.
Viticulture and enology (the science of making wine) are intimately entwined. The grape that is grown is the foundation of the wine it eventually becomes, therefore, it is important the viticulturist and the enologist work together closely.
