Classroom Equipment Home

What's here: All Kirkwood classrooms on the Iowa City Campus are equipped with instructor’s tables with PCs and a ceiling-mounted projection system for both computer and video/DVD projection. All classrooms have powered speakers, VCR/DVD combo unit and DVD drives in the PC. Some classrooms also have video presenters (ELMO). All classrooms also have overhead projectors.

Most instructors’ tables include a printed set of instructions attached to one side of the table in a clear plastic sleeve. These instructions include the basics for successful operation of the equipment. The library conducts special training sessions for new faculty, and we are happy to orient individual instructors to equipment in their classrooms by appointment. Contact the library checkout desk at 887-3613 or iclib@kirkwood.edu

What to do in case of problems:

Always contact the library checkout desk if you experience problems with any of the equipment in your classroom. Call ext. 3613 for immediate assistance, or email iclib@kirkwood.edu to report problems. There is a phone in the hallway of the annex, as well as on the west end of the 3rd floor credit center building, that may be used to contact the library.

To request special equipment:

Contact the library at least 48 hours in advance to request special equipment for your classroom or for your professional use. The following are all available through the library:

Slide projector
Tape recorder
CD player boom box
Digital camera
VHS camcorder

Public address system
Laptop computer
Portable DVP (projector)

Librarian Kate Hess will present information to discuss and debate regarding best practices for integrating information literacy skills into your course, recognizing where information literacy skills are already being addressed, and figuring out the best ways to assess these important lifelong learning skills in student work.

Information Literacy Database Workshop

Keeping up with technological advances in libraries isn't easy. Bring your professional research needs and work with a librarian in determining research strategies for thoroughly locating and obtaining specific materials. Meet other colleagues also engaged in research and catching up with the advances in electronic research tools. Examples might be the research required for new class offerings, an emerging issue within your discipline, projects for graduate courses or Endowed Chairs, or even the early bibliography building before writing an Endowed Chair proposal. Presented by Kate Hess, IC Campus Librarian

Information Management Tools -- Keeping up online

Learn to use tools such as Firefox, personalized home page (e.g. iGoogle), RSS feeds and tagging/bookmarking sites to keep up and keep track of information without the overload. Catch up on some of the most useful (and fun!) online tools that can make your personal favorites available to you from any computer, and make the work of keeping up with your profession more streamlined. Presented by Kate Hess, IC Campus Librarian.

Request Instruction Sessions Home
If you would like to take advantage of librarian expertise in helping your students complete assignments, please fill out the form below to request an instruction session or other assistance. If you'd like to discuss the particular needs of your class, or would like to collaborate with a librarian on a research assignment or other project, please contact Kate Hess, Iowa City Campus Librarian.

Librarians can customize each session to the needs of your students. Library tours are available, but it is often easier to demonstrate searching techniques and library resources in your classroom on in the room 205 teaching lab. We encourage you to think about specific student learning goals for the session, and to work with a librarian on designing a class activity that will give students practice in the skills you want them to learn.

You can request a instruction session by filling out the Session Request Form.
