Kathleen Van Steenhuyse is currently Dean of Social Sciences and Career Options programs at Kirkwood Community College.

Education

B.A. in History, Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa; M.A. in East Asian History, minor in Modern America from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.  Secondary teacher certification from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa.  Evaluator Approval Certification.  Professional Educational Administration Leadership Certification in Higher Education through the Chair Academy and University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

 

Work Experience Related To Education

 

11/97- Present  Dean, Social Sciences/Career Option Programs.  Includes Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Georgraphy, History, Cultural Studies, Criminal Justice (includes Corrections), Paralegal Studies, Communication/Media/PR, Sign Language Interpreter Training, Education Careers, Early Childhood Education, Disabilities Services (includes Special Education), and Human Services.  Also includes supervision of the student newspaper, the Communique, and student broadcast, Kirkwood Student Productions; and the campus child care center, Kirkwood Kids.

 

08/96-10/97  Instructor and Department Chair in Social Studies, Waterloo Community Schools, East High School and Bunger School of Technology, teaching American Government and Advanced Placement U.S. History college preparation courses in Eastern-Western Cultures, Global Studies class for the non-college bound, U.S. History classes for 9th grade, Psychology classes for grades 10-12.

 

06/87-01/89  Adjunct Faculty, Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, teaching Asian Civilization; Modern Japan; Korean and Vietnam Wars. Initiated an oral history audio archive for the Clarke Media Center as an outgrowth of a project on Korean and Vietnam War veterans' and families' experiences.

Interests, Hobbies, Travel

 

Reading, writing, golf, bridge, politics, family activities, student activities, entertaining, traveling--have traveled throughout all geographic regions of the U.S., to the Caribbean twice, to Mexico five times, to England and Scotland, to China in 2001 representing Kirkwood Community College for International Development (CCID), and to Canada, 2005, Austraila, 2007, and Singapore, 2008, respresenting Kirkwood for Global Education Network (GEN).
