Amount: $1,000 per year
Scholarship will be awarded to multiple students each year to be used for financial assistance other than tuition and fees.

AEGON USA, INC./Transamerica Foundation Kirkwood Scholarships for Students with Disabilities
Amount: $500 per year
Scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors with disabilities wishing to attend Kirkwood Community College after high school. The scholarships may be used for training in a high tech field. These fields include computers, engineering, graphics, health sciences, math, science, technology, business or similar career choices requiring post-secondary education.

  • Award to two students.
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time (six credit hours).
  • Must have applied to a Kirkwood program prior to submitting a scholarship application.
  • All scholarship application forms and support information must be submitted at one time to: John Nietupski, Grant Wood AEA, 4401 Sixth Street SW, Cedar Rapids IA 52404-4499.
  • Deadline: 12:00 noon the first Friday of April. Partial applications will not be accepted.
  • Must attach three letters of recommendation. Letters should discuss academic and/or work capabilities and personal qualities of the applicant. At least one letter must be from someone in the field of education and one from an employer.
  • Must attach a high school transcript.
  • Must write a thank you letter to the donor and submit it to John Nietupski.

B.A. and Margaret Ann Jensen Endowed Scholarship
Amount: $250 - $500 per year
B.A. Jensen was instrumental in establishing the community college system in the state of Iowa. For over 30 years, he was involved with both the Cedar Rapids school board and the Kirkwood Board of Trustees. He was the first chair of the board of trustees serving in that capacity for 18 years. B.A. also helped establish the National Association of Community College Trustees and served as its president in 1975. He also organized the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees and served as their first president. Through his visionary leadership, he helped Kirkwood become a community college of national stature and reputation. In October 1978, B.A. was awarded the prestigious N. Dale Ensign Leadership Award honoring him as an outstanding community college trustee in the U.S. by the American Community College Trustees. Locally, B.A. was a mason contractor for 40 years.

Margaret worked for over 27 years as office manager of the family masonry business, raised four children and was a Republican Party committee coordinator for eight years in two Cedar Rapids precincts.

Ballantyne Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Amount: $500 per year
Dr. Selby Ballantyne served as Kirkwood’s first superintendent from 1966 until his death in 1977. This scholarship has been created as a living memorial to Dr. Ballantyne’s ideals. It was his belief that a student – otherwise unable – might take advantage of opportunities at Kirkwood. The recipient is to be a student whose aspirations reflect the commitment and dedication Dr. Ballantyne shared as he shaped Kirkwood Community College.

  • Award to one full-time student.
  • Must be enrolled at time of application or have completed one semester at Kirkwood within the past 18 months.

The Barbara Ann Francis Young Endowed Scholarship has been established to assist adult female students.

Bernard J. and Catherine H. Campion Scholarship
Amount: $1,000 per year
This scholarship will be awarded to deserving high school graduates who strive to develop a work skill to improve their opportunity for self-satisfaction and to gain a foundation for life employment. Bernard and Catherine built the Campion family foundation through farming and investments – all with a two-year business school certificate and high school degree. In the belief that technical training may provide the sound basis needed "to learn to live a life as well as to earn a living," the Campion family funds this scholarship for vocational training.

  • Award to two students.
  • Recipient must be a recent high school graduate with preference given to Regina High School or other Catholic high school graduates. (Must indicate how you meet the criteria.)
  • Must have a minimum grade point average of 2.0.

David H. Jensen Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Amount: $250-500 per year
Dave Jensen was one of the college's charter employees, joining the then Area X Community College on July 1, 1966, as the department head of business education. Prior to his retirement in 1998, he served as personnel director, dean of career education and associate vice president for instruction. With education being his top priority, he was a leader in the establishment of many well-recognized programs. During his 32 years at Kirkwood, he received many distinguished awards at the college as well as many state awards. The award of which he was most proud was the Honorary Student Award he received in 1989. Dave touched many lives, young and old alike, encouraging and mentoring those he met along the way.

  • Must be an Iowa resident from Kirkwood's seven-county service area (Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn or Washington).

Amount: $1,000 per year
Available to Iowa high school seniors who plan to attend Kirkwood full-time in the fall following graduation.

  • Award to 60 full-time students.
  • Must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
  • Must demonstrate strong leadership qualities. At least one community and two high school leadership experiences are required during junior and/or senior years.
  • Must submit transcript, essay and two references.

The M.J. Bartleme Scholarship has been established in memory of Army Lieutenant Colonel Michael J. Bartleme by his wife Lois, and sons Mike, Mark and Jeff.

Mildred Joslin Scholarship
Amount: Up to $1,200 per year
Mildred Joslin has set up an endowed fund through the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation to encourage serious area high school seniors with their education and career plans at Kirkwood Community College.

  • Award to one student.
  • Must be a graduate of Jefferson, Kennedy, Metro or Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. Each year, on a rotating basis, applicants from one of the above-mentioned high schools will be considered for this award.

  • Award to three students.
  • Must be in residence at the Mount Pleasant Corrections Facility for one calendar year from the March 15 application due date.
  • Must plan to live and work in Iowa after release from the Mount Pleasant Corrections Facility.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must have a minimum 2.0 grade point average, 2,400 GED score or a 10th grade equivalent TABE score from Oakdale.

The Paul and Rebecca Shawver Endowed Scholarship has been established to provide support to students who are enrolled in credit programs at Kirkwood Community College.

Performing Arts Scholarship
Amount: Up to $800 per semester

  • Award to multiple students.
  • Must maintain an academic load of at least eight semester hours including at least one course in a subject other than music or theatre (need not be a Music or Theatre major to apply).
  • Must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5.
  • Must actively contribute to the Music and/or Theatre program including enrollment in ensembles and/or productions.

Performing Arts Honors Scholarship
Amount: $1,500 per year

  • Award to four students.
  • Must be a full-time student and an advisee of the director of the applicant’s major.
  • New and returning students are encouraged to apply.
  • Must be registered for Applied Music, Music Education, Theatre or Theatre Education.
  • Must be making continuous progress toward an associate’s degree in addition in the major area.
  • At least one course per semester must be in an area outside of music or theatre.
  • Must have and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Students who have been out of school for more than five years may submit a portfolio in lieu of a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
  • Must attend an audition on the stated day and time listed in the Performing Arts department promotional materials.
  • New and returning students must have their application and supporting materials submitted to the college by June 1 preceding the fall semester for which they are applying for the scholarship.
  • Must submit three references to the advisor who auditions the student.
  • Students may be eligible for this award for a maximum of four semesters (consecutive semesters or non-consecutive semesters will be considered).
  • Students must demonstrate talent, commitment and responsibility as observed by their directors.
  • If a student does not maintain eligibility for the Honors Scholarship but remains eligible for a regular Performing Arts Scholarship, he/she may, at the discretion of the director, be given a lesser award not to exceed $600 per semester.

Amount: $2,000 per year for first-year students
$1,000 per year for second-year students
First-year awards are open to graduating Iowa seniors preparing to enter their first year at Kirkwood.

  • Award to 20 full-time students.
  • Must have a minimum ACT score of 25.
  • Must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5.
  • Must maintain a 3.25 grade point average and reapply to be considered for second-year funds.

The Robert and Elizabeth Allsop Endowed Scholarship was established to provide assistance to the area of greatest need at the college. The Kirkwood Eagles Golf Classic is held annually to raise funds to provide support for our Kirkwood athletic programs and help our athletes with tuition support or equipment for their program. US Bank, Clifton Gunderson, RuffaloCody, and Cedar Rapids Toyota provided sponsorship for the Eagles Golf Classic and the athletic scholarship program.

Student Publications Scholarship
Amount: $350 - $450 per year
The Kirkwood student newspaper, The Communiqué, offers scholarships for experience in writing, editing and design.

  • Eight editorial scholarships available.
  • Managing Editor receives $450. Must be registered for 12 semester hours, have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and be enrolled in Communications Media/Public Relations program.
  • The remaining editors (Features, Opinion, Copy, Sports Entertainment, Photo and Layout) receive $350. Must be registered for at least nine semester hours and have a minimum grade point average of 2.25.

  • Must be pursuing a degree or certificate in a credit program at Kirkwood.
