All components of the program are designed to be flexible and to assist the students in preparing for a variety of careers in the criminal justice system. The student has the option to enter employment after completing the associate degree or transfer to a four-year college or university. This program provides advising to guide students in choosing courses that will meet the requirements of specific transfer institutions.
According to The Sentencing Project, a nonprofit agency that studies criminal sentencing, most Americans are ill-informed about issues related to crime. For example, most of us thought crime had increased between 1996 and 1998 -- when in fact it had decreased. However, one fact most of us know is that Americans are being locked up at a faster rate than ever before.
Probation officers and correctional treatment specialists play a vital role in helping decide who stays behind bars and who goes free.
Probation officers supervise convicted criminals who have been given probation (the chance to live in the community) instead of or in addition to a prison or jail sentence. Correctional treatment specialists work in jails or prisons, helping inmates prepare for life after they're released.
