Description: The Communication Media/Public Relations program provides students with a broad base of preparation for the communications industry. The program covers industries including Journalism, Media Arts, News Reporting, and Broadcasting, Photojournalism, Radio and Media Sales.
The curriculum combines a strong Arts and Sciences core along with specific professional courses to serve students who want to pursue a four-year degrees or those who plan to seek employment following graduation. This program provides advising to guide students in choosing courses that will meet the requirements of specific transfer institutions.
Because most positions in the communication field require a strong general education background combined with special expertise, this program requires students to complete both theoretical and practical course work. Students select an area of specialization that develops skills suited to their particular career interests.
The Communique, Kirkwood's student newspaper and Kirkwood Student Productions are housed in the Communication Media/Public Relations program.
The Public Relations option provides a well-rounded curriculum to prepare students for various public relations positions. It is recommended that students, especially those planning to enter corporate or agency departments, give strong consideration to marketing as a secondary area of concentrated study.
