Kirkwood Community College has established policies and procedures to implement provisions of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and section 504 of the 1973 Rehab ilitation Act. These policies and procedures are used to determine reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities to meet academic and technical standards required for their educational program. The Learning Services department offers support for students with disabilities. These services are available to qualified students at no cost. Using a case management team approach to assist students, Disability Accommoation Services arranges reasonable accommodations for students. What is Reasonable Accommodation?

Reasonable accommodation assists students with disabilities to use alternative strategies for learning and assessment of learning. Some examples of reasonable accommodation include tutoring, sign language interpreter services, textbooks on CD's, alternative testing, taped lectures, support courses and counseling services.

The need to plan ahead for requesting accommodations is very important! There will be many individuals on campus involved in determining how accommodations can be made, so planning ahead will insure accommodations can be arranged in a timely manner.

In most cases, this means accommodations should be arranged BEFORE the start of the semester.

Is Receiving Reasonable Accommodations Automatic?

No, receiving accommodations is not automatic. The student applying for accommodations must fill out the application form and provide documentation of her/his disability. Accommodations are then decided in consultation with the student's case manager, the instructor and the student. Reasonable accommodations are "reasonable" and may be negotiated with the instructor of the course.

How Does a Student Apply for Accommodations?

A student who has a disability and needs accommodations because of that disability should take the following steps:

  1. Complete a Support Services for Students with Disabilities online application form.
  2. Submit the appropriate documentation of her/his disability along with the application to the Learning Services department in 2063 Cedar Hall.
  3. Qualified students will then meet with their assigned case manager who will work with the student and the student's instructors to develop an accommodation plan based on the student's needs.

Can an Accommodation Plan be Changed?

Yes, an accommodation plan can be changed, as a student's needs may change during the time she or he attends Kirkwood.
