Entry Time: Fall, Spring, or Summer

Award: Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts

Description: Students wishing to enroll in Cultural Studies via the Understanding Cultures series may choose from among a wide range of regions and peoples: Latin America, Japan, China, the Mideast, and Sub-Saharan Africa. These courses have an interdisciplinary approach including history, geography, economics, sociology, politics, and cultural aspects of the arts, language and religion.

Students hoping to pursue cultural studies at a four-year institution typically follow the Liberal Arts program requirements while at Kirkwood. Students complete a combination of general education and elective courses that prepare them for transfer. Cultural Studies courses can apply toward both the historical-cultural core and elective requirements needed for the Associate of Arts degree. These courses also meet the Humanities requirement for Associate of Applied Science programs. Furthermore, one course (3 credits) will count towards Diversity credit on a student’s transcript.

Kirkwood has articulation agreements with many of the four-year institutions within the state of Iowa, including all three Regent Universities. These articulation agreements are in place in order to assist students in the transfer process. It is always recommended that students check with the Advising & Transfer Center (108 Iowa Hall) in order to ensure that they are aware of any specific requirements such as foreign language, laboratory science, diversity and grade point average.
