Holiday Safety

Finals are almost over, and heading home for the holidays could soon be your next activity. Kirkwood would like to share our annual safety tips with you as we wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

Report suspicious behavior or unlawful conduct.  Donít become involved in, or put up with this type of activity. You may share information or make a report by calling 911, Campus Security at 389-1774, or talking with your apartment manager. You can also remain anonymous by using Kirkwoodís confidential ďSilent WitnessĒ form, (click here).
Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you are distracted, itís much easier for someone to take advantage of you. Also, keep track of your valuables including your wallet or purse and never leave valuables unattended. Carry only the amount of cash you need. Finally, if you leave something in your car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight.
If youíre planning to travel during the holidays, there are a few things you can do before you leave in order to protect your home or apartment while you are away.
Keep it a secret Ė The first rule of thumb is to keep your holiday plans a secret. Although itís wise to let close friends know your plans, the fewer people that know you will be away the better. Donít post the information on social media like Facebook or twitter. Criminals tend to target apartments or homes when they know the occupants are away.
Lock all your windows and turn off electrical appliances.
Hide the valuables  or put your valuables in a safe place. If you live in an apartment, itís best to take your jewelry with you. Laptops and other electronics should also go home with you for the holiday season. Donít take chances, take it with you.
Donít forget to hide important documents like social security cards, bank, and other information. This information could be used to steal your identity.
Have someone pick up your mail or newspaper.
The holidays are an exciting time so have fun. Just remember, safety and security is everyoneís responsibility!
