Training Fire Service Personnel

The CITA-Kirkwood Fire School is a partnership between the Central Iowa Training Association and Kirkwood Community College, since 1986. This fire school is one of the largest in the State of Iowa and is committed to providing the highest quality fire training through efficient use of resources in meeting the training, safety, and education needs of fire service personnel across Iowa and nearby states.

The 38th Annual Fire School is scheduled for Sept. 28, 2024.

Location

The 38th Annual CITA-Kirkwood Fire School will be held at the Kirkwood Continuing Education Center (Fire Training Facility), 101 50th Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This facility is 0.5 north of main campus, on the corner of Hwy 30 and Bowling St. SW.

Tuition
Registration fees for classes at the CITA-Kirkwood Fire School vary. Please check each registration form for fees by class selection. Payment must accompany your registration. Please remember that lunch is part of your class cost.

Confirmation
All participants that are registered prior to Sept. 16, 2024 will receive their confirmation letter. Those that register after this date will need to pick up their confirmation packet at check-in. The confirmation packet will include a confirmation letter, name tag, and check-in information.

Fire School Check-in
Check-in will take place from 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. All participants must check-in before proceeding to their classes and pick up their registration packet. Walk-in registrations will be accepted for a class on a space-available basis only.

Meals
Lunch will be provided to all paying students and is located in the same building as all classes.

Class sizes are limited and pre-registration is required.

When calling, inform the registration staff that you are registering for the CITA Fire School. Please have the full name, address, phone number, social security number, course title, and section number for each student you are registering. You may pay by MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or American Express.

Registering by Mail-in Registration Form
To register by fax you may fill out the Fire School Registration Form (see back of brochure) and fax to the number listed at the top of the form.

Billing and Refund Policy
If you want your tuition billed, you must fill out and submit the form located in the back of the brochure in order to have your tuition billed to your department or service; otherwise, you will be responsible for the charges. Individuals will not be billed.

Registrations canceled in writing before 5 p.m. on Sept. 26, 2024 will receive a full refund. Cancellations made after this date will not be eligible for refunds.

Volunteer Fire Fighter Training Fund Credit
Due to partial funding through the Volunteer Firefighter Training Fund and the Paul Ryan Training Fund, individuals registering for the following courses have already received a reduction in fire school tuition. You or your department are still responsible for the cost listed for each class which includes the cost of your lunch and material fee(s), resource fees, etc.

  • Structural Firefighting
  • Vehicle Extrication - Big Rig Rescue
  • Fire and Safety Operations Training for Motorsports Venues

Code of Conduct
Your conduct while attending out-of-town educational programs or other fire service events should be no different than it would be at home in front of your families. Wherever you travel, the FD license plate, the blue light, the window decal, and/or the Maltese cross on your jacket or T-shirt identifies you as a member of an honorable and proud profession. Your actions reflect not only upon you as an individual, but upon your fire department and the fire service as a whole. The public expects our actions to be above reproach on and off the emergency scene.

Age Disclaimer
The following policies were put into effect regarding minimum age requirements for courses at the CITA-Kirkwood Fire School. All students must be at least 18 years of age and must be fully covered by insurance. This policy has been implemented to assure the safety of the students who attend the schedule classes at the Fire School.

Disclaimer
The Central Iowa Training Association and Kirkwood Community College Fire School, except as provided under Chapter 25-A of the Code of Iowa relating to tort claims, shall not be held liable for damages or injuries to students or persons participating in the school. Participants are advised to purchase individual insurance if their employer or fire department does not provide insurance coverage for injuries.

7:30-8:45 a.m.: Participant check-in, vendors available

9 a.m.-Noon: Classes in session, vendors available

11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: Lunch (staggered schedule), vendors available

Noon-1 p.m.: Check-in for afternoon learning seminars, vendors available

1-4:30 p.m.: Classes in session, vendors available

Exhibitor times:

  • Saturday Only, 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The following rules regarding personal protective equipment will apply for several hands-on classes at the CITA-Kirkwood Fire School. If Personal Protective Equipment are indicated in the class description, students must provide the following equipment in order to participate. No exceptions will be made unless noted in the class description.

Personal Protective Equipment must include:

  • Helmet (NFPA compliant)
  • Protective hood
  • Coat with liner (NFPA compliant)
  • Pants with liner (NFPA compliant) (Note: 3/4 length boots are not approved in place of pants)
  • Firefighting boots
  • Gloves (Cal OSHA or NFPA compliant)

Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with spare cylinder (Note: Cylinders under current hydrostatic test will be refilled at no cost.)

Exceptions to individual equipment items will be noted in the class descriptions. Individuals with beards, sideburns or other hairstyles that interfere with the proper seal of a breathing apparatus face piece will not be allowed to participate in classes requiring SCBA use. Protective hoods over beards are not approved.
