FACILITIES DEPARTMENT FIVE-YEAR VISION

The Facilities department is composed of maintenance, custodial, grounds and security operations.  The results of their work touch the lives of everyone Kirkwood serves through the comfort or discomfort, pleasantness or unpleasantness, of their working/teaching/learning environment.

To maintain a clean, comfortable and safe community college environment for the faculty, staff and students of Kirkwood.

MAJOR INITIATIVES

Energy Management

  • Replace outdated lighting
  • Replace outdated HVAC systems
    • Seek utility company funding/support
  • Comprehensive web-based energy management and control system
    • Provides temperature control to every major facility on and off campus
  • Competitively bidding our gas and electric purchases
  • Researching and utilizing alternative fuel sources

Construction Management/Design

  • Capability to design and competitively bid projects under $100,000
  • Provide our own construction management person to all-size projects

Disaster Preparedness

  • Developed comprehensive plans and procedures
  • Developed a partnership with the city, county, state and federal authorities
  • Detailed/written true-to-life exercises conducted quarterly

Environmental

  • Moved the environmental function from the Environmental Training Center to Facilities
  • Integrated the environmental program with Disaster Preparedness
  • Quarterly and annual internal inspections re: environmental laws and regulations

Security and Safety

  • Provide a security presence 24 hours, 7 days a week
  • Developed systems for monitoring, tracking and reacting to criminal activity
  • Monitor parking lots and roadways
  • Monitor and react to criminal activity in areas surrounding Kirkwood
  • Security/safety works hand-in-hand with Disaster Preparedness program

Maintenance

  • Highly skilled/experienced personnel
  • Work performed quickly, correctly, with minimal disruption
  • Computerized work scheduling

Custodial

General Conditions

  • Planning has become very effective with the KQIP process
  • Capital Improvement process continues to be effective for short term needs
  • Campus communications are very good with the utilization of e-Tempo, Student e-mail and Colleague
  • Internal department communications are conducted through computer, bulletin boards, regular staff meetings
  • Appropriate training and communicating expectations promotes leadership
  • Our risk-taking quotient is low to moderate as we concentrate on keeping essential and critical systems operating efficiently
