Getting Started : STEPS TO SUCCESS

International students and online degrees students have different steps to starting college. Click here if you're an international student, here for online degrees students.

1.

Visit Campus
Experience for yourself what Kirkwood has to offer. Come to a TGIF campus visit. Hear about college life, tour campus and housing. Get information about programs, student activities, costs, housing and admissions procedures. Ask anything. Get answers.

2.

Apply
Skip this step if you already applied. Some programs fill up fast, so apply today! It’s free, fast and easy. Select one program or area of emphasis, and you’ll receive a welcome letter in the mail with your Kirkwood "k” number and additional information about completing the admission process..

Some programs have additional requirements. You will receive information from the program that will detail the steps to be accepted. Make sure you check your e-mail and postal mail! If you have questions, call 319-398-1265 or send us an email.

3.

Email
Create your email password and access your Kirkwood email account. It's free, and your correspondence with us will come in the form of email. Your password will also be your login for EagleNet, Kirkwood’s online program to help students manage their academic careers.

4.

Placement Exams
Submit your current ACT scores to the One Stop office or take the free COMPASS test. Using this information, we’ll get you into the reading, writing and math courses right for you. Call 319-398-5456 or your nearest Kirkwood location for testing details. Math scores valid for two years. Reading and writing scores valid for three years.

5.

Program Conference
Certain applied science programs require you to attend a one-hour program conference prior to acceptance to the program. You’ll learn the specific admissions requirements, plus have the opportunity to have questions answered by program staff. Complete this step as soon as possible. Click here to find out about program conferences.

  6.

Financial Aid
Submit your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) ASAP after January 1. Don’t wait — the financial aid process takes three to five months. Submit your FAFSA here (www.fafsa.ed.gov). Kirkwood’s school code is 004076.

7.

Scholarships
We give out close to $3 million in scholarships every year! Apply now for your opportunity to be considered. Most Kirkwood scholarship applications are accepted January 1 through March 15.

8.

Housing
Forget small dorm rooms — Kirkwood students live in style. Whether you’re planning to live with a friend or need to be matched with a roommate, we can help you land a spacious apartment right next to campus. Explore or call 319-398-7647.

9.

Orientation
Orientation for new students is held several weeks before the start of each term. During orientation, you meet with an advisor, register for classes and get your EagleCard, which is your official Kirkwood student ID. You will be notified by mail of these orientation dates. Find out more about Kirkwood orientation.

10.

Buy your Books
Buy your books in person at the Kirkwood Bookstore or online. Books are available 10 days prior to the start of each semester.

11. Get Involved
With more than 150 events each year and more than 80 clubs and organizations on campus, Kirkwood offers opportunities outside the classroom that help each student get the most out of his/her college experience.
