ANNUAL KIRKWOOD FLU SHOTS

As we enter not only the regular flu season, but a season of uncertainty with the H1N1 string, this service can really be helpful in keeping our campus healthy. The flu vaccinations are free of charge for full-time, part-time benefits-eligible employees, adjunct instructors and retirees. At a cost of $24, non-benefits-eligible employees, spouses and children 18 and older of eligible participants may register for flu vaccinations. Students may also participate at cost and on a walk-in basis. St. Luke's will be administering the shots at the following times and locations:

Registration will start Sept. 20th 2011.

Cedar Rapids: [register now]
Wed. Nov. 2nd...7am - 11am
Thurs. Nov. 3rd...11am - 3pm

Iowa City: [register now]

Please contact Wellness Coordinator, Jill Williams 398-5640 or Jen Francescon, 398-5596 if you have any questions or need assistance registering.

Kirkwood Wellness would like to encourage as many people as possible to get the vaccine, especially:
• People age 50 or older.
• People with chronic health conditions.
• Pregnant women.
• Health care providers.

Additional people who should consider it: international travelers; people that are also in confined office spaces; people that are in enclosed settings. It not only protects yourself, but it also protects the people that are around you.

Reasons to avoid vaccination for influenza:

  • History of severe (anaphylactic) reaction to eggs or egg products.
  • Allergy to Gentamycin, Polymyxin, Neomycin or Thimerosal.
  • History of Guillian-Barre Syndrome.
  • Prior serious reaction to Influenza vaccination.
Reasons to delay Vaccination for influenza:
  • Current pregnancy if in the first trimester.  If past first trimester must have physician’s approval.
  • Current acute illness with fever. (Mild illnesses without fever such as the common cold are not cause for delaying vaccination.)
Vaccinations will not be given to anyone under the age of 18.  Those who are under 18 should contact their own physician for vaccination.

A 10-15 minute wait after the injection is requested prior to leaving the vaccination
site for safety reasons.

Immunization will be given in the upper arm/shoulder area so it is requested
that appropriate clothing be worn (short sleeves or sleeves loose enough to be rolled up to the shoulder).
